Pros and Cons of In-Play Sports Betting

In-play – or live betting as it’s sometimes called – is an exciting evolution of online betting. It’s a form of betting that allows you to get more involved in the game, the team and the players! The odds are influenced by the match live, making it more difficult yet fantastically exciting to bet.

Pros

Strategy can Fail

No matter what the statistics indicate, nothing is certain in sport. The underdog can take you by surprise, or a player can get wounded. In-play allows you to take these factors into consideration when betting. Use this to your advantage, and take time during intervals to analyse the situation and place new accumulators based on present facts rather than theoretical analysis.

Intuition

Stats and figures are greatly important in in-play betting, but don’t forget to use your intuition. A players performance can be affected by a tackle or fowl card. It’s important to analyze individual behavior in order to make informed bets. You analyze individual behaviors by making assumptions, which hopefully turns into cash.

Better Odds

You often find better odds in-play than you do when you bet regularly. It’s easier to spot if a team lags behind, or if comeback is lures in the second half of a game. In-play is a great tool in fast paced games such as ice-hockey, as there are frequent scores, whereby a team’s odds fluctuate quickly.

Greater Enjoyment

If betting and sports are your favorite things, then you’ve hit the jackpot! You get to watch all of your favorite teams, and bet at the same time. The bettor gets to interact more with the game and the art of betting with in-play. There are more opportunities to bet with in-play, making it unpredictable and exciting.

Cons

No Time for a Strategy

If strategy and research are the two reasons that you like to bet, maybe in-play isn’t for you. It’s a spontaneous form of betting that provides a limited time frame, you have to make quick decisions. You might find that intervals aren’t enough time to make an assumption, and place a bet. The strategist is sure to get anxious or bored using in-play, and why ruin two of the greatest things on earth: betting and sports.

You Have to be Quick

When the match takes a turn, you have to bet quickly. If there’s a penalty you can only place a bet in the seconds before the penalty has occurred so not only do you have to think quickly, but act quickly as well. Odds fluctuate all the time during in-play, so you have to act as quickly as possible. If your team has been close to scoring for a while and you predict that they will, act on it immediately, or you might lose out on a win for you and your team.

Coverage Delay

Unless you’re at the actual game, you will always have slight delay in coverage. This can be dangerous when in-play betting is at stake! If you’re trying to make a bet, and you’re unable to, then wait for a few seconds. Your coverage is delayed and something is going to shake the game, which is why you can’t bet. A player might be suspended, or a goal may have been scored. You’ll just have to be patient!

You Need Dedication

With regular sport betting, you do research beforehand, place a bet, and then get on with other things, laundry maybe. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have time to watch the game, because you can check the results at any time. With in-play betting you need to watch the game to bet. This obviously isn’t a problem to the bettors that are sports fanatics, but for those of you who prefer to maintain a distance from sports, in-play isn’t ideal. It is also crucial that you’re realistic with your betting, betting on your team won’t magically make it win.

More Losses

As stated before, when betting live the time frame is shorter which may lead you to make a bet based on instinct rather than analytical thought. Moreover,  you are more likely to make a greater quantity of bets with in-play than with regular betting, especially novelty bets such as the number of corners in a soccer game. Make sure that you keep track of all the bets that you’ve made so you don’t end up losing more money than you can afford.

Blurred Judgement

There are three main things that can cloud your judgment when betting in-play. Firstly, you might feel inclined to bet on a player that you like when you’re at home. Go for a hunch if it lines up with critical thinking. Secondly, people love underdog teams, but the matter of the fact is that they’re usually underdog teams for a reason. They’re just not good enough. Thirdly where you watch the game can blur your judgment. If you’re at a bar, or enjoying several pints from the fridge, alcohol and adrenaline can cause losses when live betting.

Few Games Work In-Play

At the time of writing, there were six MLB games playing live. Of these six, Bwin only had one available for in-play, 888 Sport had four, and Betway had all six. These companies are among the best betting sites available in Canada. It can be annoying if the game you’re watching doesn’t have in-play with your preferred bookmaker, but as this is a growing phenomenon hopefully it won’t be a problem for long. Live betting odds themselves are similar across the sites, with the odds in constant change.
